The festival, now in its tenth year, is the region’s premier celebration of date production and the varied products this desert fruit is now lending itself to. A fascinating insight into many desert traditions, the festival includes a date beauty contest with total prize money of around AED 5 million, a date auction, and educational sessions on how to care for palm trees. There are also competitions for the best lemons and mangoes; a heritage show runs alongside the event.
For the first time, the event features a new competition - The Fruits of the House, with a total prize purse of AED 100,000 (US $ 27,250). Various fruits such as grapes, figs, pineapple, pomegranate and grapefruit - all originating from participants’ gardens - are allowed to take part.
The Festival is open daily after the breaking of the fast (Iftar), from 8pm to 1am.
