AbuDhabi Attracts Golf Fans

The Australian pair, who are likely to find an enthusiastic following amongst the UAE’s significant Australian community. also , Trevor Immelman - the 2008 Masters champion - is the latest golf superstar confirmed for the US$2million AbuDhabi Golf Championship. Immelman made history in 2008 as he showcased his trademark sterling stroke-play to claim his maiden Major at Augusta National.

Immelman beat pre-event favourite Tiger Woods by three strokes to become the first South African to don the event’s iconic green jacket since the 1978 Augusta victory of Gary Player, the most successful international golfer of all time and the designer of the Arabian Gulf’s only ‘ocean’ course on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island.

The 28-year-old has been described by Player as the closest thing he’s ever seen to American legend Ben Hogan, widely acknowledged as golf’s greatest ever ball striker.
All four days of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship will be covered live on high definition TV, reaching a global audience of over 140 million.

The field for the Championship represents the best to date and with several improvements having been made to facilities for this event, including a bigger spectator village and enhanced sponsors' area and car parking.

Sergio Garcia, the 2008 US Players’ Champion, US Tour Championship runner-up and winner of this week’s Castello Masters, will be looking to turn the tide on Harrington after finishing second best to him at this year’s US PGA Championship.

“Playing in Abu Dhabi is always exciting. The course is fantastic, the competition is always very intense and everyone wants to start the year well to build momentum ahead of a long season,” said the 28-year-old, who started playing golf when he was just three years old.
 
 
 
 
 Harrington : Abu Dhabi is moving in the right direction in terms of golfing excellence

Irishman paddraig Harrington, the current Open and US PGA Champion, is making his second European Tour appearance of the season in Abu Dhabi.

Harrington said : “I’ve done quite nicely in Abu Dhabi, I like the course and I do feel it’s one I’m competitive on. I am focusing hard on my preparation and I think I’ll be ready with my ‘A’ game. This year I’ll be good to go.

“I believe Abu Dhabi is moving in the right direction in terms of golfing excellence. The standard of the National course is top-class - the conditions are as good as they can be and the course is a joy to play.”
