Taxis are reasonably priced and plentiful and can either be flagged down at the roadside or booked by phone through companies. Street taxis are easily recognised either by their white and gold livery with a green roof sign, or by their silver livery and yellow roof sign.
Daytime (6am – 10pm) metered fares in the city start at AED 3 (approx. US $ 1) and increase by an additional AED 1 for every subsequent kilometre. Night fares are slightly more, starting at AED 3.60 and increasing by AED 1.20 per kilometre. A tip is recommended.
Many taxi drivers do not speak fluent English, and are not always familiar with street names, so it helps to know exactly where you are going, and close by landmarks such as shopping malls, parks or banks. It’s also helpful to take the phone number of your destination with you in case you lose your way.
All taxi companies service the airport in addition to specially registered airport taxis. The journey into town from the airport costs AED 70 – 80 (approx US $ 30).
