Skiing takes on a whole new meaning on the desert sand dunes of Abu Dhabi. Boasting the largest sand dunes in the world, towering hundreds of meters above the surrounding plains, the Liwa Oasis on the edges of the Rub al-Khali or Empty Quarter is a sand skier’s paradise. So strap on your sand board and sashay down the seemingly endless red sand slopes for an exhilarating experience like no other. For the novice sand skiers, daunted by the 300 meter dunes of Liwa, skiing down the gentler dunes that stretch across the Abu Dhabi desert may be just the place to start on this daring adventure.
A word of caution though: the temperature in the desert will be quite high during the day, so aim for the dunes in the early morning. Wear light clothes, sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the strong sun, and don’t forget to use plenty of sunscreen.
